Shri D.V. Singh takes over as CMD of THDC India Limited

Rishikesh, 1 December, 2016: Mr. Dhirendra Veer Singh today assumed charge as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of THDC India Ltd. (THDCIL), one of India’s premier hydropower generators with an installed capacity of 1450 MegaWatts.  Prior to taking over as CMD, Mr Singh was holding the charge of Director (Technical) in the company; Mr Singh’s tenure as CMD shall be up to 30 April 2021.

 

THDCIL is a ‘Mini Ratna –Category-I’, Schedule ‘A’ and ISO certified public sector undertaking,and currently has a portfolio of 18 projects totaling to an installed capacity of 6,374 MW in various stages of development. Its flagship asset is the Tehri Dam Project, one of the country’s most important multipurpose projectsthat, besides generating 1000 MW of power to the Northern Grid, also provides irrigation benefits to 8.74 lakh hectares area in Uttar Pradesh and 200 cusecs of drinking water to Uttar Pradesh and 300 cusecs to the Nation al Capital of Delhi. In keeping with Government of India’s renewed focus on renewable energy, THDCIL is now diversifying into wind and solar energy generation.  It has already commissioned a 50 MW Wind Power Project at Patan, Gujarat and is developing a 50 MW Solar Plant with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) in Kerala.

 

Mr. Singh takes over the company at a critical juncture as it seeks to consolidate its position in the hydropower industry as well as strike out into the wider renewable energy space.   “After a professionally fulfilling journey of more than two decades with THDCIL, it is an honor to take up this new responsibility,” said Mr D. V. Singh.  “As CMD my objective would be to ensure that THDCIL continues to work as a responsible hydropower developer, and that we can take the same focus on sustainability to all our new endeavours.”

 

 

Mr Singh is a civil engineering graduate from NIT Rourkela (1983), and has more than three decades of exhaustive experience in underground works, powerhouse works, spillways, contracts, material management, rehabilitation and heavy civil construction. Before joining THDCIL, Mr Singh worked with Larsen & Toubro.

 

Mr Singh played a key role in the construction of Tehri powerhouse and was in charge of its planning and construction. He was also actively involved in the construction and planning of the Spillway System of the Tehri Project as well as its associated jobs like contracts and material management, construction of building and roads etc. He was also deeply involved in the relocation and rehabilitation of people displaced by the Project. 

 

Mr Singh is also credited for his leadership in helping turning around progress on the Koteshwar Hydro-Electric Project (4x100 MW) when it was almost derailed by delays. He introduced several innovations in implementation that helped THDCIL commission the project in a record period of four years.  The Project received several national level awards for efficient implementation and Mr Singh was also honored with the ‘Eminent Engineering Personality’ award at national convention of ‘Institutions of Engineers’ (India) in 2012, at IIT Roorkee for his contribution to its implementation and management. He has also been conferred with “Chartered Engineer” by Institution of Engineers (India) for this project.
